I like the way this photo gives a sense of mystery, and from the expression on the model’s face, even a feeling of creepiness like I am being watched or taunted. The use of the joker card is also interesting because I get the feeling it is symbolic of something and has a deeper meaning than what it appears to be.
The way you used a spot colour on the joker card helped to emphasize it as the main subject. In The lightness of your subject helped to contrast him against the black around him and lead the viewer’s eye to him after the joker card to captivate the viewer in his expression. The contrast in texture between the grainy look of the sweater and the smooth card also creates interest.
In ‘The Doctor’ the use of the chiaroscuro effect is effective in establishing the mood and is well done. The subject blends into the background nicely without patches of light that have bounced. The use of black and white also adds to the effect of the mysterious mood with a nice spot colour on the card.
This photograph is very interesting overall and has a very mysterious feel to it which adds to it. You used great technical skills with your camera to create a very pleasing photo. The focus of this picture is great because your attention is brought right to the centre of the image of where the card is. It is clear and because it is the only bright thing in the image, it adds and creates emphasis. To add, it was a very good choice to use a spot colour on the card because it adds more light in a photo that is already dark. I believe it was a very good idea to change the colour of this photo to black and white. It makes for a better composition and it draws the eye in more than it would if it were in colour. I absolutely love how his eyes are the darkest on his face and because his face is light up because of the Chiaroscuro lighting you used, it really adds that little something extra. This composition is also a very good example of Chiaroscuro lighting, there is a main light source that is hitting his face and the rest is shadows with some mid-tones, overall a well executed photo.
When I first look at this photo, it gives off a very mysterious feel. The position that your subject is sitting in, and his facial expression really adds to the photo. The joker card adds and even more dramatic effect to the photo and I feel like that a story could easily be told behind this photo.
Your use of spot colour on the joker card is a great idea. It draws the viewer in and shows the main subject of the photo. I like your use of the studio lighting, and I feel like the black background was the most useful background to use because it doesn’t distract the viewer from the main focus. I like how much detail was captured in this photo and the angle it was shot at.
Overall, you establish the mood very well and you made this photo extremely well done by using a black and white filter. There isn’t much I would change about this photo. Good job!
Thank you! I’m glad you felt the mysterious feeling, that is really what i was going for in this photo. I tried hard to seclude the card and make it pop so it will add emotion and i am glad you caught onto that. Thank you for your input!
excellent use of spot colour on the joker card. It creates emphasis to lead your eyes in. But more importantly it returns colour to the image and changes the mood. Had it only been black and white, this photo would have led to a nostalgic mood, but the spot colour makes it seem more playful and dynamic. I also love the possisioning. having the model possed so his head is on an angle to the left, and the arm on an angle to the right creates a triangle whjich is very helpful in leading eyes throughout the photo. Even the way the model holds the card speaks volumes. Because he held it nonchalntly it brings an effortless feel to the image, and adds to the overall “joker” mood.
Thank you! I am glad you picked out how i told the model to hold the card, it really added alot. I am also glad you liked the technical aspect of the photo. Thank you for your input!

Thank you! I am glad you enjoyed the spot coloring and my technical aspect of taking the photo. I personally love this kind of portraiture and am glad you liked it too. Thanks for your input!
